What is staff augmentation?

Definition

Staff augmentation is a hiring model where external engineers join your existing team and work under your management, on your roadmap, using your tools — rather than a vendor delivering a finished project. You direct the work; the supplier handles employment, payment and replacement.

The distinction that matters is who decides what gets built. Under staff augmentation, you do. The engineer takes tickets from your board, joins your standup, and is reviewed by your team. Under project outsourcing, a vendor takes a specification and returns a result, and the decisions in between are theirs.

That difference drives everything else. Staff augmentation is priced per person per month or per hour, because you are buying capacity. Project outsourcing is priced per deliverable, because you are buying an outcome. Augmentation adapts when requirements change mid-sprint, which is the normal condition of product work; outsourcing handles that through change orders.

The model has one hard prerequisite that vendors rarely mention: someone on your side has to have the time and authority to direct the person. Companies that buy augmented engineers without a manager available get a worse result than if they had bought a fixed-scope project, and they usually blame the engineers.

Key points

  • You manage the engineer; the supplier employs and pays them.
  • Priced per person per month or per hour, not per deliverable.
  • Best when requirements change during the week.
  • Requires someone on your side with time to direct the work.
  • Knowledge stays with the engineer, so it stays with you as long as they do.

Frequently asked questions

Is staff augmentation the same as outsourcing?

No. Outsourcing hands over responsibility for an outcome. Staff augmentation hands over capacity while you keep responsibility for the outcome. People use the words interchangeably and then buy the wrong one.

Is staff augmentation the same as contracting?

Close, but contracting usually means you find and contract the individual yourself. Staff augmentation normally includes sourcing, screening and a replacement obligation from the supplier.
