What is nearshore software development?
Nearshore software development means hiring engineers in a nearby country whose working hours substantially overlap your own. For a U.S. company that means Latin America, typically zero to three hours of time difference — as opposed to offshore, where the gap is six to thirteen hours.
The word sounds geographic but the useful definition is temporal. What makes a location nearshore is not the distance in miles, it is whether a question asked at 11 AM gets answered at 11:15 or the following morning. Brazil is roughly 4,700 miles from New York and shares seven to eight working hours with it; Ireland is closer to New York than Brazil is in flight time terms yet shares fewer afternoon hours.
The trade against offshore is straightforward: nearshore costs more per hour and removes coordination overhead. Offshore costs less per hour and adds a management layer whose job is translating between time zones. Which is cheaper overall depends on how much your requirements move — the more they change, the more expensive a 12-hour feedback loop becomes.
For U.S. buyers the main nearshore markets are Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia and Costa Rica. They differ mainly in pool size and in which U.S. time zone they line up with best.

Frequently asked questions
Is nearshore cheaper than hiring in the U.S.?
Substantially — typically 55 to 70% less for comparable seniority once U.S. payroll taxes and benefits are counted. It is more expensive than offshore Asia.
Which country is best for nearshore?
Depends on your time zone and stack. Mexico aligns best with U.S. Pacific and Central; Brazil has the largest talent pool and aligns best with Eastern. There is no universal answer and anyone giving you one is selling.
