Software developer rates by country
By monthly rate, the Philippines and India are the cheapest of the countries compared here, at $2,000–4,000 and $2,500–4,500 for a senior engineer. Brazil costs $4,000–6,500 and buys something they cannot: a full working day shared with the United States, with nobody on a night shift. The cheapest rate and the cheapest project are not always the same country.
We sell Brazilian engineers, so read this table knowing that. It is ordered by price, which puts 2 countries above us — and we left it that way, because anyone comparing already knows India is cheaper, and a cost table where the vendor comes first is worth nothing to the person reading it.
| Country | Senior, per month | Overlap with U.S. hours | Talent pool |
|---|---|---|---|
| Philippines | $2,000–4,000 | None without a night shift | Large |
| India | $2,500–4,500 | None without a night shift | Several million developers |
| Argentina | $4,000–6,500 | 7–8 hours | About 130,000 developers |
| Brazil — what we sell | $4,000–6,500 | 7–8 hours with U.S. Eastern, 4–5 with Pacific | About 750,000 developers |
| Mexico | $4,500–7,000 | 7–8 hours on a normal schedule | About 220,000 developers |
| Poland | $6,000–9,000 | 2–3 hours, at the edge of the Polish day | Strong senior pool |
| A U.S. remote hire | $13,000–17,000 | Full | — |
Monthly cost of one senior engineer, all in, as a company pays it — not take-home pay. The U.S. row is a fully loaded employee: salary plus payroll taxes, benefits and insurance. Ranges, not quotes.

What the difference buys
Philippines · $2,000–4,000
What you get. The lowest rate in this table.
What it costs you. Your engineer sleeps while you work. Every question waits a day for its answer, which is fine for a defined backlog and expensive for a product still deciding what it is.
India · $2,500–4,500
What you get. Roughly 30 to 50% less than Brazil, and the only place in this table with the volume to add twenty engineers in a quarter.
What it costs you. The same one-day feedback loop, and written English that is usually better than Brazil’s against spoken English that varies more.
Argentina · $4,000–6,500
What you get. The same time zone as Brazil at the same price, and a strong senior pool for its size.
What it costs you. A smaller pool, and currency and capital-control history that makes contracts and payment routes worth checking with your own counsel.
Brazil · $4,000–6,500
What you get. A full working day shared with the U.S. East Coast without anyone on a night shift — the cheapest way to buy same-day answers.
What it costs you. Two countries in this table are cheaper. If your work can genuinely be handed off and collected the next morning, you are paying for an overlap you will not use.
Mexico · $4,500–7,000
What you get. Shares U.S. Central hours exactly, sits next door, and travel is a short flight.
What it costs you. The highest rate of the Latin American options here, and a pool a third the size of Brazil’s.
Poland · $6,000–9,000
What you get. Deep engineering culture and the easiest option if your team is in Europe rather than the U.S.
What it costs you. The most expensive non-U.S. option here, and for a U.S. team the overlap lands at the end of their day — the Pole stays late, every day.
How to choose without a spreadsheet
- Your work can be handed off and collected next morning. Hire where the rate is lowest. The overlap you would pay for is an overlap you will not use.
- Your team decides things during the day and needs answers the same day. Pay for the time zone. Count the decisions in a normal week and multiply by one day of waiting — that is the real price of the cheaper rate.
- You need twenty engineers this quarter. India, and nowhere else on this list. Latin America does not have the volume and no honest vendor here will tell you otherwise.
- Your team is in Europe, not the U.S. Poland overlaps you fully and Brazil gives you four to five hours of your morning — the same overlap a U.S. West Coast team gets, which plenty of companies run on.
Frequently asked questions
Which country has the cheapest software developers?
Of the countries on this page, the Philippines at $2,000–4,000 a month for a senior, then India at $2,500–4,500. Both are genuinely cheaper than Brazil and neither overlaps U.S. hours without someone working at night. If the rate is the only variable that matters to you, they win, and we will say so.
Is it worth paying more for a nearer time zone?
It depends on one thing: whether your work can be handed off at the end of your day and collected the next morning. A defined backlog survives that; a product still deciding what it is loses a day per decision. Count the decisions your team makes in a week, multiply by a day of waiting, and compare that with the monthly difference.
Why does a Brazilian senior cost about the same as an Argentine one?
Because the two markets compete for the same engineers and sit in the same time zone. The difference is pool size — Brazil has roughly five times as many developers — and, for a buyer, how easy it is to replace someone without restarting the search.
Are these rates what an agency charges or what the engineer earns?
They are what a company pays per engineer, per month, all in — the number that lands on your invoice, not take-home pay. Our own rate for a senior is a flat $4,900 a month, published on the pricing page, which is inside the Brazil range on this table.
How current are these numbers?
They are the same figures used on each country comparison page on this site, kept in one place so they cannot disagree with each other. They are ranges, not quotes: a specific engineer with a scarce stack sits at the top of a range, and a generalist at the bottom.
