Upwork alternative
Open freelance marketplace · comparison last checked 2026-09-09
Upwork is an open marketplace where anyone can list, so the range of quality is enormous and the screening work is entirely yours. HireBrazilDevs pre-screens every engineer and places them full time at a flat monthly rate. Upwork is cheaper and far more work; the difference is who spends the twenty hours reading profiles.
Read this first. Every figure below attributed to Upwork is a publicly reported range, not a quote from them and not a number we can vouch for. Terms change without notice. How Upwork works
Upwork is an open, self-serve marketplace. Anyone can create a profile, rates span from a few dollars an hour to well over a hundred, and the platform takes a percentage. It is genuinely excellent for small, well-defined, low-risk work. For a full-time engineer on a product team it shifts the entire burden of sourcing, screening and reference-checking onto you — which is fine if you have the time and dangerous if you do not.

When Upwork is the better choice
- The task is small, defined and low risk — a landing page, a scraper, a one-off integration.
- You genuinely enjoy screening and have the hours for it. Some engineering leaders do, and they do it well.
- You need the absolute lowest price and can accept the variance that comes with it.
- You want to try someone for ten hours before committing to anything.
When we are the better choice
- The role is full time, ongoing, and a bad hire costs you a quarter.
- Nobody on your side has twenty hours to read profiles and run first-round screens.
- You need IP assignment and confidentiality handled properly rather than accepted through a checkbox.
- You want somebody accountable if the engineer does not work out.

Frequently asked questions
Can I not just find the same Brazilian engineers on Upwork for less?
Some of them, yes — and if you have the time to find and screen them, that is a legitimate strategy and we will not pretend otherwise. What you are paying us for is the screening, the replacement guarantee and the contract structure. If those are worth less to you than the margin, Upwork is the right call.
