Brazilian Public Holidays in 2027: A Planning Guide

If you manage engineers in Brazil, the holiday calendar is the one operational detail that surprises U.S. teams in the first year. Not because there are many holidays — the United States has ten federal ones — but because four of Brazil's move every year with Easter, and one of them, Carnival, is not technically a national holiday at all and yet stops the country anyway.

Here is the 2027 calendar, what each date actually does to a working week, and the two planning habits that make the whole thing a non-issue.

The 2027 national calendar

Counting only the dates that remove a weekday, 2027 costs about nine working days — close to the U.S. federal total. The years where Brazil looks expensive are the ones where 1 May and Christmas land midweek. 2027 is not one of them.

Why Carnival is different

Carnival is the one that needs explaining to a U.S. manager, because the legal answer and the practical answer disagree. Carnival Monday and Tuesday are not statutory national holidays under federal law; they are what Brazil calls ponto facultativo — optional closure, declared for federal offices and followed by almost everyone else. Ash Wednesday, the day after, is conventionally a half day, with work resuming at 2 PM.

In practice, treat the Carnival week as two and a half days off, and expect the Monday before to be quiet in Rio, Salvador and Recife. In São Paulo, Curitiba and Porto Alegre it is closer to an ordinary long weekend. What you should not do is schedule a launch, a migration or a client demo for that week and assume half a team will be around to watch it.

The bridge day, and why your sprint math is off without it

When a holiday falls on a Tuesday or a Thursday, many Brazilian companies close the adjacent Monday or Friday as well. This is called a feriadão, and it is a convention rather than a rule — it varies by employer, and in 2027 it is the difference between losing nine days and losing thirteen.

Three dates in 2027 invite bridging: 7 September (Tuesday), 12 October (Tuesday) and 2 November (Tuesday). Ask once, at the start of the engagement, whether your engineer bridges those days. It is a one-line answer that removes three separate surprises later in the year.

The two habits that make this a non-issue

Put the calendar in the shared document in January. Not the dates you remember — the dates with the day of the week attached, because "12 October" means nothing to a sprint plan and "Tuesday 12 October, likely bridged from Monday" means everything. If you run two-week sprints, three of the 2027 sprints have a hole in them, and you can see which three in about a minute.

Agree the notification rule, not the holidays. The useful commitment is not "tell me your holidays" but "tell me two weeks before any day you will not be online, holiday or not." What about state and municipal holidays?

They exist, and they are real days off, but they matter less than the national list for a distributed engineer. São Paulo observes 25 January (city anniversary), Rio observes 23 April (St George) and 20 January (St Sebastian), and most state capitals have one or two of their own. If your engineer works from a single city — and most do — ask for their municipal dates alongside the national list and you have the complete picture in one exchange.

One planning note that has nothing to do with holidays and catches people anyway: Brazil abandoned daylight saving time in 2019 and stays on UTC−3 all year, while the United States shifts twice. Vacation is a separate conversation, and it is the one people skip

Holidays are fixed and public. Vacation is neither, and the difference matters more than the calendar does. A Brazilian employee under the CLT regime has a statutory right to thirty days of paid vacation a year. A contractor working through their own company has no statutory entitlement at all — which means that unless the contract says something, nobody has agreed anything, and the question surfaces as an awkward conversation somewhere around month eight.

Fifteen working days a year, agreed in advance and taken with notice, is a common and reasonable arrangement for a full-time contracted engineer, and it is what we write into engagements. What matters more than the number is that it exists in writing, alongside the rule about notice. Two weeks is the usual notice for a planned absence; anything scheduled around Carnival or the end of December should be flagged earlier, because that is when everyone else is asking too.

What to do about the December window

Brazil does not empty out in December the way the popular version suggests, but the last two weeks of the year are slow across the whole country — school holidays start in mid-December and much of the corporate world winds down. If you have a release that must ship before year end, land it by the second week of December. If you have a migration that can wait, wait: January in Brazil is a genuinely productive month, and it is the quietest stretch on the calendar until Carnival.

A working rule for the year

Plan capacity at about 245 working days for a Brazilian engineer in 2027, after national holidays and before vacation. Ask for the bridge-day answer and the municipal dates in the first week. Do not schedule anything irreversible for the Carnival week or the two days around Christmas and New Year. That is the whole discipline, and it costs one conversation in January.
